Jason Wuerfel - Academy Director
Wuerfel enters his third season as the Director of the Beach Bums Baseball Academy in 2008.
Wuerfel's professional career included stints with the Elmira Pioneers, Mid-Missouri Mavericks, and Ohio Valley Redcoats. Before playing pro ball, Wuerfel played four seasons for the University of Michigan and won the 2003 Wolverine Award from Spirit and Leadership. Wuerfel was a three-time first team all-state athlete for nearby Glen Lake High School, earning the honors twice in football and once in baseball.
Wuerfel will also take on the role of Hitting Coach on the Beach Bums coaching staff for the 2008 season.
Jeremy Crum - Academy Manager
Crum enters his second season as the Manager of the Academy.
Crum played collegiately for Central Michigan Unversity and Kellogg Community College. In junior college, Crum earned All-American honors and helped lead Kellogg to the NJCAA World Series. Crum signed with CMU and hit .308 in two years as the Chippewas starting centerfielder. Crum stayed on as an Undergraduate Coach for the Chippewas after his senior season and was the assistant coach for the Edmonton Steamers of the Coastal Plains League in 2005.
Crum interned with the Beach Bums in 2006, acted as the Director of Ticketing in 2007, and was promoted to the Director of Sales and Marketing for the 2008 season.
Jon Cahill - Hitting Instructor
Cahill enters his first off-season with the Academy and his second as the Field Manager of the Traverse City Beach Bums.
Cahill signed with the Anaheim Angels after he completed his college career at the University of Massachusetts - Lowell. Cahill made it as high as AA in the Angels system before joining the Washing Wild Things in the Frontier league in 2003. For the Wild Things, Cahill hit .281 over two seasons and had a .964 fielding percentage while playing 181 out of a possible 184 games at shortstop. During the 2003 season, Cahill also tied for the league lead in sacrifice bunts with 11.
Cahill turned to coaching in 2005 and immediately won the 2005 Frontier league Coach of the Year award while acting as the Hitting Coach for the Ohio Valley Redcoats. Cahill joined the Beach Bums staff in the same capacity in 2006, and was named the squad's manager in 2007 after then manager, Jeff Isom, was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Mike Lozier - Pitching Instructor
Lozier is originally from Battle Creek, Michigan where he attended Lakeview High School. As a junior at Lakeview, Mike was the winning pitcher in the 2000 state championship game and signed with Kellogg Community College where he was teammates with Academy Manager Jeremy Crum. Lozier spent two years at Kellogg and went 9-2 on the mound as a sophomore, collecting Region XIII All-Tournament and 2nd Team All-State honors. After Kellogg, Lozier signed with Oakland University.
